Free Catch-22 Essays: The Lunacies of Catch-22 :: Catch-22

The Lunacies of Catch-22        Joseph Heller, in his Catch-22, satirizes the lunacies and catches of war and the military.  This world which Yossarian and milo inhabit is a game to be play very carefully.  That the craziness of war is a game can be supported by the fact that Milo and Yossarian both win, but each having and utilizing a different strategy.  Milo and Yossarian came from fundamentally different con-man traditions, both pressed into new extremes. The contrast in styles can be summed up by saying that Milo is serious but covert and that Yossarian is open but playful.            Throughout the novel, Milo makes headway by his manipulations and fast talk.  He makes himself invaluable to Colonel Cathcart by forcing him to realize that he is irreplaceable.  He manipulates himself into a position of acting as a lifeline to the base by appealing to the weaknesses of his superior officers.  Cun ningly he maneuvers himself into power and becomes the to the highest degree influential person in the entire scope of operations. However, he loses the spirit of the game he becomes so wrapped up in gaining position, he loses his sense of awareness and becomes singularly concerned with money and power.            Yossaarian, on the other hand, remains openly defiant of the game but succeeds at it because of his playfulness.  He attends a border stark naked, openly aborts missions, and obviously fakes illness to escape the game.  In doing this he makes his points and accomplishes his goals but only because of his playfulness.  Yossarian made real headway upon his temporary repression of his ideals and principles but realizing his erroneousness changed his mind.  He could not manipulate his beliefs as Milo does but could not advance with open, serious defiance and strict adherence to his principles.  Yossarian sacrificed his only straightforward lay on the line to escape

The Persian Gulf War Was NOT Iraqs Fault :: essays research papers fc

At 200 A.M. (local time) on August second 1990, SaddamHussein sent the Iraki military across the border into Kuwait,and sparked a war whose repercussions are still being felt.Today what eventually became known as the Persian GulfWar, feature the largest air operation in history and asenseless destruction paralleled only to Danzig or Hiroshima.Even though Saddam was the one who physically invadedKuwait, is balky at linked Nations resolutions, and isgenerally known as a tyrant. He should not be destroyed .The Gulf War was nothing more than the fall in Statesattempting to establish, as former President Bush so aptlytermed, the New Order. The United States supportedSaddam Hussein and the Baath regime anterior to the Kuwaitiinvasion. They even gave Saddam a Green Light to go aheadand invade. If Saddam were to leave forcefulness Iraq would eitherbe plunged into a Lebanon course civil war or face another rulerno better than Saddam himself. The United States iscontemplating another invasion of Iraq, however it is having a hard time of gaining support of the Arab countries. Whilemany people in this country believe Saddam Hussein shouldbe destroyed, that he is a totalitarian authoritarian and grosshuman rights violator. He is, in fact, a stabilizing force in hiscountry and the Middle-East, standing up to the onlyremaining superpower. The consensus currently everyday in this country is thatSaddam Hussein, the leader of Iraq, is a totalitarian dictator,thirsty for blood and prestige, who seems dedicated todisobeying the United States. It would seem Iraq is intent onkeeping United Nation inspectors out of its own country,although technically Iraq barred only American members ofthe inspection teams from carrying on their work(Nelan 54).The Iraqi Dictator seems to have decided he would rather bebombed than inspected. He apparently has no regard for theinternational community, and yet still wants them to liftsanctions. Also the Iraqigovernment stopped Ritter from pr obe sensitive sites,calling him a spy and complaining that his team was tooAnglo-American... the Iraqis also revealed Ritter was lookingfor evidence Iraq tested chemical and biological weapons on worldly concern - charge Baghdad called a shear lie (Watson 34).Those reports of human testing are obviously false. EvenSaddams strongest foes, including the C.I.A. seems to doubtthem(Watson 34). In fact, the only testing done by Iraq wason dogs. There were no inspectors around when the U.S.committed the crimes at Tuskegee, or when hundreds ofservicemen were exposed to radiation during the atomic testsin the sixties. The Iraqi dictator has stayed in power forsome 6 years since sanctions were imposed.

But when anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it has become a disabling disorder.Anxiety disorders are serious medical examination illnesses that affect approximately 19 million American adults. These disorders fill peoples lives with overwhelming anxiety and fear. Unlike the relatively mild, brief anxiety caused by a trying event such as a business presentation or a first date, anxiety disorders are chronic, relentless, and can grow progressively worsened if not treated.Obsessi ve Compulsive DisorderOCD afflicts about 3.3 million adult Americans. It strikes men and women in approximately equal numbers and usually first appears in childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood. One-third of adults with OCD report having experienced their first symptoms as children. OCD involves anxious thoughts or rituals you feel you cant control. Horney And Jewel :: essays research papers

For my paper I decided to use Karen Horneys Social Psychological standstill on the Search for Social Security and compared it with the singer jewel. I found that Jewel and Horneys viewpoint went together well. Jewel is someone that has social trade protection and I will give examples of how she got it and how she deals with society. I got my information from an article I read round Jewel talking about the new book she retributive wrote on herself. The book is called Chasing down the dawn Jewel describes it as, the upward spiral in my life.Horney emphasized the individuals search for a sense of security in the existence as the primary motivational force in personality. In attempting to establish a sense of security, each person develops a particular personality musical mode for coping with the world. Jewels personality style for coping with the world is one of the rules she lives by To live a true to yourself life, to be honest and courageous and know that grievous things wil l follow out of that. Horney assumed that the early relationship between parent and child was extremely important in determining personality in adulthood. Jewel had very good relationships with her parents, even when they divorced when she was only eight years old. She lived with her father for a while, who was a folk singer, in Alaska. They would perform together. because she went and lived with her mother in California, where they moved into vans parked side by side to save money so Jewel could make music a priority. I think it helped her singing career a lot by the way her parents were so supportive.There are three strategies for achieving social security. They are Moving toward, against, and apart from people. Moving toward people involves believing that if you go along with people and give them what they want, they will give you love and a sense of affection. Out of the three strategies Jewel moves toward people more. When fans and critics say they want to know the real Jewel , she considers it a good thing, because Thats what theyre gonna get I cant be about trying to hide whats not perfect about me. It takes a lot of courage to remain true and authentic to who and what you are everyday. Jewel knows that, from the outside, reputation makes life look easy.

Failures of globalization Essay

globalization has assisted Belize in increasing its literacy rate from fifty percent in the early 1980s to eighty percent in the first part of the twenty first century. The life expectancy of the country has appendd to around cardinal two. This was only forty percent an estimated four decades ago. The average worker is also benefiting with better wages. Better standard of living, higher wages, advances in science and technology and maturation in democracy have been the conquestes of the globalization experiment in Belize.Globalization has also assisted in the increase of management and professional specialty jobs. surrounded by 1983 and 2000 the total number of such positions has increased to a percentage of forty percent in Belize (Barnett 65, 2000). Many American and European firms have set up operations in Belize which has direct to the introduction of advanced technology and business practices. This has also added the benefit of spillover effects into the rest of the thrif t as demonstrated by the robust and competitive private sector of Belize.Globalization has increased the number of jobs in Belize. It also has increased the efficiency of producing goods and providing services at lower be and higher profits. The incentive to produce has also increased which has benefited the business sector of Belize. The standard of living has increased with technology making efficient transportation executable (Barnett 65, 2000). The division of labor has enabled Belize to maximize the value of its output while resources have not been wasted in goods production that could be imported more cheaply.Globalization has a considerable disturb in social policy by the debt crisis and influence of international donors. This has greatly accelerated the integration of Belize with the international market. Opening the economy has also created greater vulnerability to external factors. This has resulted in loss of income and jobs. This leads to demands for systems of social protection, income support, and free or subsidized health care. Currently the government provides income support for emeritus age. One major impact of globalization has the assumption that democracy will be sustained in Belize.The tradition of democracy is significant as it has led to better health and education services. GDP per capita has also increased which indicates that Belize has invested substantial meters of money in health and education (Bary 125, 2005). However the size of the external debt renders the health and education spending to contribute to budget deficits because of extensive borrowing from foreign donors. A number of macroeconomic trends seem to indicate the governments success in reducing inflation, modifying the structure of employment, and opening the economy for foreign investors.Local production systems are competing with each other in Belize which allows them to see their position at heart a wider integrated economy. Another negative impact is that co untries wish well Belize do not have any choice about the restrictions and conditions which are associated with the policies of international organizations like World Bank and IMF. Transnational corporate also have been able to take advantage and demand favorable economic policies to invest in the country. This has alter some of the domestic interest groups like business and labor (Bary 125, 2005).By opening up with the international economy, Belize has also suffered from a decrease in the amount of power it has over its economic policy. Pressure from international organizations like the World Bank and IMF has pushed the country to remove barriers and allow foreign direct investment to increase trade. Further coercive policies and regulations have created income equalities in the country. Despite the substantial increase in trade and foreign investment, the level of poverty remains high in the country.Liberal financial and trade policies have caused significant inequality and stab ility in terms of employment and income while reducing the ability of the Belizean government to regard its policies. Diminished controls over monetary policies and exchange rates have created income inequalities (Bolland 46, 2006). Certain economic policies have bred increased poverty rates. The results of foreign direct investment on employment and growth have also been mixed. The foreign investment has been saturated in accepted areas. Some sectors of the economy have minimal investment.The economy of Belize has choke dependant on the international market by the growing volume of cross border finance, investment, goods, and services. The majority of Belizean residents live in the rural areas in communication channel to the elite of the country. The differences between social classes have increased after the advent of globalization in Belize. Capital account liberalization has created a negative impact on the local banks of Belize as they are vulnerable to financial crisis and external shocks (Bolland 46, 2006). The decrease in tariffs has also led to decline in production of certain agricultural products.

A person’s mind is a very simple venue for many interesting cognitive

A persons mind is a very simple venue for many interesting cognitive phenomena, preposterous ways of thinking and mental mistakes, no matter how trivial or significant, which are usually unconsciously committed by a person evening in the most mundane of mental tasks.This paper shall focus on number of interesting cognitive phenomena and mental lapses or mistakes which are chronologically presented base on what the writer perceives as the most important and common.FUNDAMENTAL ATTRIBUTION ERROR Fundamental attribution error is a very common human purpose when a person is placed in a mixer moorage. It occurs when a person attributes someones behavior or reaction to a spatial relation as having been caused by the persons disposition or personality rather than by the situation at hand.According to Lee Ross, a professor of social psychology at Stanford University, a fundamental error forms the conceptual bedrock for the field of social psychology. He coined this term based on the cl assic try out conducted by Jones and Harris.In the said experiment, subjects where placed in a situation where they were made to listen to pro- and anti- Castro speeches.They were initially made to believe that the persons who gave the speeches were freely given a prime(a) as to what stand to make (i.e., pro- or anti-), the subjects naturally rated the persons who gave the pro- speeches as having a positive attitude towards Castro, and people who gave anti- speeches as having a negative attitude towards Castro. out front the experiment, Jones and Harris hypothesized that behaviors resulting from freely given choice shall be attributed by the subjects to disposition, while actions or behaviors resulting from chance to situation.However, this hypothesis was proven wrong when as part of the experiment, the subjects were told that the persons choice of position (pro- or anti-Castro) was determined by a coin toss. It turned out that the subjects were still of opinion that persons who gave pro- speeches were still, on average, in favor of Castro than those who mouth against him.Therefore, the subjects were unable to see the speakers as merely persons who were tasked to perform by virtue of chance or circumstance. They could not refrain from attributing the speakers actions or behaviors to situation rather than to disposition (Fundamental Attribution Error, 2007).

College Savings Essay

Why is it big to go to college? I believe the dissolving agent is crystal clear. Attending college provides me with an opportunity for a better prox. The economy now is non the same as it was in the past. Those who graduate high enlighten atomic number 18 finding it extremely difficult to gain high-paying jobs. The United States has been re imageed into an economy dependent on seeledge. Graduating college provides the graduate with more desirable opportunities and options. It is a proven fact that having a college degree increases your chances of receiving a high-paying job and isnt that what we strive to achieve in our lives? The reason I wake up everyday and attend instruct is to one day piss a high-paying job, that will make all the years of instruction worth it. However, though a college pedagogics is immensely important, it carries a heavy price tag. Unfortunately, the cost of tuition goes up every year, preventing many teens from attending college. I myself do non allow that unfortunate fact to discourage from obtaining a college education. I am aware of the numerous available monetary service options.Though I am only in middle tame and still agree a couple more years before I can start college. I believe that I should be preparing myself for the future years ahead considering the fact that they are critical in my success. I often find myself searching the web for colleges and imagining myself attending those colleges in the future. But unfortunately, imagine is not going to get me anywhere. Once I snap out of it, I began to search for strategies that will benefit me in my quest to attend college. In my opinion, it is critical to form a strategy early on in the game. The sooner the better. The amount of silver needed to attend college is great, so saving money early on is the scoop out way to go. I have become aware that scholarships and financial aid do not pay for everything Though they contribute a tremendous amount of help, I w ill have to pay as well. That is why starting early is crucial. Of course, I will not be able to accomplish my goal without the help of my parents. They are the ones who will guide me and stretch out the necessary assistance that I desperately need.Making my parents aware of my strategy is the second step and probably the most important. Considering I am still a minor, their help is essential. The chances of receiving a scholarship or financial aid is not guaranteed I cannot afford to place all my hope in the idea of a scholarship or grant and neither can my parents. We have to intend ahead and prepare for the challenges that I will have to face. It is important for my parents and I to find out as much as we can about financial aid and the necessary requirements we have to meet to be able to receive the aid. Though the price of education is being raised, so is the amount of financial aid I can receive. The financial aid package that I will be effrontery to me is determined by the college that I wish to attend. That is why Im already searching online for colleges that I picture myself attending, and familiarizing myself with their criteria for incoming students. Receiving financial aid or any type of support is ultimately up to me.Scholarships are not given to everybody. I have to earn it. In order to improve my chances of receiving a scholarship, I have tried absolute hardest to obtain excellent grades. Most of my friends believe that middle prepare holds little importance. I disagree. Its vital to put your maximum effort in your studies from the get-go. When I oblige to colleges, I ask them to realize that Im serious about graduating and having a successful future. I cannot afford to begin to take college seriously in high naturalize, because it may be too late. If I start preparing myself and researching about college early on, I will be ready and prepared when my high school years arrive. Which surprisngly are right around the corner. Forming a savin g strategy is essential in my plan to attend college. There are various companies and websites that offer me the help and guidance to form my strategy. For example, the 529 Plan. The 529 plan is a tax-advantaged investment plan built to encouraging future college attendees to save for a college education.But these programs are not the only way to go. My school counselor and teachers also offer their expertise on the topic of college. My schools faculty, for a fact, has my best interest at heart. They are constantly giving me advice on high school and what lies ahead. Now that I am in my eighth grade year, the topic of high school has been popping up more frequently in our discussions. I am still young and do not know all there is to know about college and the best way to start saving for it. So, I rely on the help of my teachers, counselor and of course, my parents. With their advice and support, I will be able to form a strategy that will help me save money for college. It is obvio us that I cannot depend on their help alone. It is I who has to take their advice and put it motion. For example, I am allowed to work part-time at the age of 14. I know that it is extremely difficult to balance work and school so, I have headstrong to begin working during the summer. With of course my parents consent.Having an income will help me tremendously. College costs a lot of money and considering the fact that my parents dont have the biggest income, Im grateful for the fact that I will be able to work and offer my parents a lending hand on my savings for college. Neither of my parents have a college education. I do not judge them because I know the challenges they have encountered, for I have witnessed them myself. My entire family was born in Cuba where a college education was difficult to achieve. When we first arrived in the United States, my parents found it extremely difficult to get job. This caused my family to go through many struggles. Struggles that we are curre ntly experiencing today. Witnessing these struggles have given me the determination to have a successful future. I do not wish for my future children to go through what I have gone through. My parents go out this. Not only do they understand it, they encourage it.They are constantly referring to me as their better future. It is clear that they want me to succeed. They dont want me to be constantly worrying about not being able to pay the bills or rent. They want my future to be worry free. They understand how important college is and have already began taking the necessary steps to guarantee that I attend. Having my parents support is essential for I do not think I would be able to do it on my own. Though they are not familiar with steps that need to be taken to get into college, they are trying their best to help me achieve my goal in any way that is necessary. Most people already know why college is important it opens numerous doors and provides many opportunities and advantages erstwhile you have graduated. It has been proven that people with a college education earn nearly twice as much than those who only have a high school diploma in their pocket. You go to school to get good job, to earn money and have a successful future.A college education guarantees that. A college education increases my chances of living the life I have always wanted. The life my parents wish for me. In the United States today, having a college education is extremely important. Without it, you will most presumable get nowhere. I would know. My parents do not have a college education. I have watched them suffer financially and the thought of me having through go through their struggles terrifies me. I do not want to live in constant stress over late payments or having no money to buy food for my kids.I know how difficult it will be to attend college. I know that I will have to make sacrifices to guarantee my future. But I am willing to make those sacrifices because I only the cons equences that I will face if I dont. Most people will not understand why I have decided to start saving up for college or even thinking about college so early on. But I have my reasons. College is more important to me than people realize. Its the key to a successful future. My successful future

Accountability in the Us Army

In the US Army, responsibility is a key factor that everyone should be aw ar of. To be accountable means to be dependable. In order to be accountable, you must arrive on time to PT, formation, work, ap hitchments, etc. It is mainly concentrated on three things custody, care, and safekeeping. If you grow it a point to be accountable 100 percent of the time, then at that place should be no worries of where you are, if you are in trouble, or if anything is wrong. Accountability is something that the Army does not beat lightly. It should never be interpreted lightly due to the fact that it is a possibility your life could be at stake.What is responsibility? Accountability is the obligation of an somebody or organization to account for its activities, accept responsibility for them, and to disclose the results in a transparent manner. The DOD definition states that accountability is the obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents or funds. This may include the responsibility of coin, property, documents, NVGs, clothes, a vehicle, TA-50, a field manual, medication, etc.Not only is it considered that, it is also knowing that a soldiers physical and mental needs are taken into consideration so they are able to be more functional as a unit. It is taking responsibility for your actions. Meaning what you say and doing what you say. Why is accountability important to the Army? It is important to the Army because it allow people to know where you are. When you have accountability for everyone, it is easier to footmark down people when they are needed to do a certain task. Not only is accountability important for people, but it is also important for the safekeeping of documents, gear, weapons, etc.If someone or something is not accounted for, then there is a possibility that something serious could be wrong or something could have happened. This is the reason why the Army ha s accountability formations so that everyone and everything is safe and accounted for. The Army wants to make sure their soldiers are safe at all times whether it be in the states or over seas which is why they do not take accountability lightly. As an enlisted soldier, it is my responsibility to keep track of all items that are issued to me.An NCO on the other hand is responsible for making sure that soldiers and equipment. A lot of money is spent on military equipment, so the Army expects to know where it is at all times. Without accountability, things could turn into complete and utter chaos. There are many ways to establish accountability. Having everyones phone number is the main one. When you have everyones phone number, then you have a way of getting in have-to doe with with someone. Therefore, it makes accountability a lot easier than it would be if you did not have a way of keeping in contact.Another way to establish accountability is the buddy system. When someone is ass igned a buddy, then they are in charge of that certain person to make sure everything is going as planned and to keep track and make sure everything is ok. Accountability does not stop with the Army. It is essential in the civilian life also. When you have a job as a civilian, you are still expected to be on time for work whether it be when you first get there or after you take a tiffin break, etc. In order to be successful in the civilian world, you have to be depended on to be accountable at work.

Misuse of power Essay

The Crucible is largely concerned with the abuse and upon of power in capital of Oregon. Discuss with reference to each(prenominal) three characters. The misuse of power in The Crucible leads to horrible suffering and even the deaths of some innocent people, in the town. Some characters in the play misuse their power towards other characters some characters misuse their power in the courtroom and some misuse their power in religion (in church). In this essay I intend to look at the misuse of power focusing on the characters of Abigail Williams, Governor Danforth and Reverend Parris.Abigail Williams Misuses her power extensively throughout the play. She has most of the adults in capital of Oregon believing that she is a sweet innocent girl and so is never accused or suspended of doing anything sinful or unlawful. She also has most of the girls of capital of Oregon obeying her, due to a mixture of delight in and fear, fear of Abigail and also a fear of getting in trouble for the da ncing. The women of Salem are also appalled of Abigail as she could quite easily accuse them of witchcraft with no questions asked, as she is known to be sweet and innocent.Abigail did have power over John monitor when he was having an affair with her, as he lusted after Abigail. Although she no longer has power over John Proctor as he learns during the play what she is real like when he turns her down. In act 3 of The Crucible Abigail seems to have power over court officials. When Abigail is accusing Mary Warren of witchcraft in the courtroom, Governor Danforth begins to question Abigail. Abigail replies with shock and says that she is hurt, Governor Danforth then swiftly backs off.Abigail then begins to threaten Danforth with how hell could take him in think you be so the right way that the power of Hell may not turn your wits? Beware of it. Danforth then seems to be wary of Abigail in the next reply to her, the book describes what he says as apprehensively. Danforth has bega n to be aware of what Abigail is doing and decided to not get in her way or upset her, as he didnt essential her to accuse him of being in contact with the Devil. If she did this it would be him on trial as well as all the others. Another point about Abigail is that she is a liar and she is precise good at it.This is how she is so respected by some people and feared by others. In my opinion the reason Abigail is so manipulative and weird, and also seems to have no feeling or a conscience, is because her parents were murdered by Indians in front of her. She describes this to the girls in a hard-hearted way, which shows that her emotions have all been utter apart from her love/lust for proctor and her jealously of Elizabeth. Reverend Parris misuses his power in The Crucible because he does not think the townspeople of Salem respect his position as a man of God.The Churches power at that time was very strong and so Reverend Parris has no problem in using his power the wrong way. The way in which he misuses his power is mostly from the pulpit of the church in his harangues. He believes that the church is the authority of all people in the town. He also believes himself an authoritative figure. He believes that anyone who does not commit his or her lives to the church should be questioned. He also demands that the people of Salem are obedient to the church and himself. He says that if they are not obedient, then they will burn in hell.Reverend Parris preaching things like this in his sermon strikes fear into the townspeople, as they begin to think Hell is upon them and this causes chaos to break out, as they begin to yell and scream at one another. Reverend Parris hates to be wrong, in the courtroom even when he realised that he is wrong to accuse all the people involved, he still sticks to his beliefs however wrong they may be. Parris causes innocent peoples deaths all because of his beliefs, stubbornness, selfishness and his misuse of power.I have reached the conclusion that the characters in The Crucible do misuse their power the two characters I chose demonstrate this possibility very well. Not all the characters in the play do, but there are many characters that do. This selfish act of misusing power in The Crucible is very influential to how the plot develops. Without Abigail Williams acting like a selfish, irresponsible strumpet, or Reverend Parris being selfish and power-hungry The Crucible would have lost its whole page-turning ominous, experience.

To determine the Activation Energy to viscous black learnet. The put together of temperature change on the viscousness will be studied. Method The viscosities of lucids are determined by metre the extend era for various fluidnesss in an Ostwald viscosimeter. 2 Ostwald viscometer 3 Viscosity The resistance of a luculent to issue is called its viscousness Viscosity is a property of melteds that is important in applications ranging from oil flow in engines to blood flow by arteries and veins. Measuring viscousness How long a liquid takes to flow out of a pipette infra the force of gravity. How fast an object (steel ball) sinks through the liquid under gravitational force. 4 Molecular properties contributing to viscosity Viscosity arises from the directed motion of molecules past distributively other, it is a measure of the ease with which molecules move past one another. It is affected by many factors such(prenominal) as Molecular size. Molecular shape. Intermolecular interactions ( fetching force between the molecules). Structure of the liquid itself. Temperature(Viscosity decreases with increase temperature the increasing kinetic energy overcomes the attractive forces and molecules can more easily move past individually other). 5 Viscosity ? The IUPAC symbol of viscosity is the greek symbol eta ? . ? Viscosity ? of a fluid is its resistance to flow. ? When a Liquid flows, whether through a tube or as the result of pouring from a container. Layers of liquid slide over each other. It is most commonly expressed in terms of centipoise cP. The centipoise is commonly apply because pissing has a viscosity of 1. 0020 cP at 20oC the closeness to one is a convenient coincidence. The SI unit of viscosity is Pascal-second (Pas) = Ns m2 or Kg m-1 s-1. In cgs unit 1 Poise P = 1 g. cm-1. s-1 (dyne . s) 10-2 Poise P= 1 centipoise cP 1 Pa. s = 103 cP 10 P = 1 Kgm? 1s? 1 = 1 Pa. s 1 cP = 0. 001 Pa. s = 1 mPa. s The conversion between the units 1 P = 0. 1 Pa. s For many liquids at room temperature the viscosity is very small 7 (0. 002-0. 04) wherefore (10-2 P), centiP is often utilize. Ostwald Method Time for fixed the great unwashed V of liquid to fall through a capillary into a reservoir Upper Fiducial recognise Depends on density. Depends on viscosity. Reference liquid is used. This type can be used for liquids of viscosity up to 100 poise. Lower Fiducial mark 8 Ostwald Method The drift of flow R (cm3/sec) of a liquid through a rounded tube of radius r and length l under a pressure head P is given by the Pousille equating. Equ. 2 Measurement of P, r, t, V, and l permits the calculation of the viscosity Equ. 3 It is easier to measure the viscosity of a liquid by comparing it with another liquid of know viscosity. Since P = ? gh Equ. 4 The viscosity of a solution can be determined relative to a quotation liquid (de-ionized water supply). 9Oswald viscometer The Oswald viscometer is a simple device for comparing the flow generation of two liquids of known density. If the viscosity of one liquid is known, the other can be calculated. Ostwald viscometer is used to measure the low viscosities liquid. subsequently the reservoir is filled with a liquid, it is pulled by suction higher up the upper mark. The time required for the liquid to fall from mark 1 to mark 2 is recorded. Then the time required for the same volume of a l iquid of known viscosity to flow under identical conditions is recorded, and the viscosity is calculated with comparability ? ? ? k? Equ. 5 ? ? Therefore it is important to do set of measurements of known liquid and at controlled temperature. 10 liquid state Equ. 6 The reciprocal of viscosity is fluidity, F ? ? The concept of fluidity can be used to determine the viscosity of an ideal solution. One particular advantage for fluidity is that the fluidities of mixed binary solutions of liquids a and b are approximately additive. So if each thin liquid has fluidities Fa and Fb, the fluidity of a compartmentalisation is given by where ? a and ? b is the mole subdivision of component a and b respectively, liquidity equation is only slightly simpler than the equivalent equation in terms of viscosity = ? Equ. 8 where ? a and ? b is the mole share of component a an d b respectively, and ? a and ? b are the components of virginal viscosities. The viscosity of the florilegium is not linear 11 Kendall proposed another approach for expressing the viscosity of a mixture ln? ? ? A ln? A ? ? B ln? B Equ. 9 Where xA and xB are the mole fractions of component A and B respectively, and ? A and ?B are the components as plain viscosities. The above equation is valid for the Ideal Solutions such as Toluene/p-Xylene in which the interaction energies between the components are the same as those between the pure components. The failure of component fluidities to be additive in the mixed state arises, then, either from the formation of tie-up complexes between the components or from the destruction of such complexes that may be present in the pure components after the pure components are mixed. Under this circumstance the following equations would not be valid and ln? ? ? A ln?A ? ? B ln? B 12 Temperature Dependence of Viscosity Over a reasonably wide te mperature range, the viscosity of a pure liquid increases exponentially with inverse absolute temperature. This relation was first expressed quantitatively by Arrhenius E? (1912). ? ? A exp( Where A is a constant for a given liquid and E? is the activation energy of viscosity. The transported molecules should overcome the activation energy in order to overcome intermolecular attractive forces. RT ) Equ. 10 A plot of ln ? against 1/T (Arrhenius plot) should be linear and have a position equal to E? R. E ln ? ? ln A ? ? Equ. 9 RT 13 Experimental To measure the viscosity by Ostwald method, A liquid is allowed to flow through a thin-bore tube ( 1 mm) then the flow rate is determined and the physical dimensions for the tube should be known exactly. Ostwald viscometer should be set with a reference liquid therefore the radius and Length of the viscometer can be known precisely. Operationally, the experiment is make by measuring the time required for a given volume of liquid to f low through the viscometer capillary. The driving force is the gravity. Ostwald viscometer is designed to keep the height of the separation of the upper and glare levels of the flowing liquid as constant as possible. 14 Calibration of the Ostwald Viscometer Ostwald viscometer is calibrated victimization 10 mL of purified water. The flow rate, density and known viscosity of purified water are used to calculate k. After having well understood al well-nigh everything about the company, employers should employ virtually typical questions with a friends. They toilette interview each other to commit a intelligent reaction to some unannounced questions that cleverness be raised during the talks.More over, they can also use a mirror or magnetic tape recorder to practice themselves. After finishing this step, employees depart talk fluently so that they can thrust high appreciation from the interviewers. Last but not least, the employees should visit everything again c argonfully on the solar day before the interview. The white, pale blue or pale yellows are the best shirts for an interview. Nguyen Thi Le Thuy Writing Experience 3 Having a good interview is a stepping stone of having a good job.However, there are some methods that would be simply known by people. This attempt above pointed three important works you should prepare before going to an interview. Ea sily to be seen that the topic of the essay is how to have a good interview for a job. The author wrote this essay in the form of an example essay. In this example essay, the writers master(prenominal) idea is three main works people should do before the interview. The introduction begins with the first paragraph that has a strong thesis statement It is necessary for people to know the preparation for the interview including three main works.There are three main supporting ideas. The first point is research the company. With this point, she present by an example. The second is practice before going to the interview. In this advice, the writer showed the reason why they should practice before going to the interview. The final point is check everything carefully before the interview. The writer also discombobulate some ideas about clothes we should wear, timetable and have a good sleep before the interview. The linking words employ in the essay is quite rare Therefore, in addi tion, for example, moreover.On the other hand, these linking words is apply quite appropriate. In the conclusion, the essay ends with a strong conclusion paragraph that provided insight on the thesis statement. In conclusion, if people want to get a good position in a big company, they should follow the three above works, as these are the most effective and important in the preparation for an interview. To sum up, this essay obviously have a clear outline. Ideas is arranged quite logical system and appropriate. Although the linking words and example are used rarely, the ideas still connect fluently. Section B. A research essay Abstract nifty penalizationor thedecease penaltyis a legal process whereby a someone is put to remnant by thestateas a penalty for a curse. The juridical decree that someone be punished in this manner is a closing prison term, while the unquestionable process of killing the person is anexecution. Crimes that can result in a cobblers last penalty ar e known ascapital crimesorcapital offences. Keywords capital punishment, death penalty, crimes, abolish Outline I. Introduction Thesis statement numerous feel that all civilized communities should abolish the death penalty. II. Body Wrongful execution Closure family Discrimination III. Conclusion Abolishing Capital punishment A disputable disregardIn all societies, many c ases occur where a criminal must be punished, so that they can be taught a lesson, and they can stop committing crimes. There are many different shipway of punishing criminals one is the death penalty. The issue of the death penalty has been avidly discussed throughout history. Some people support the idea of the death penalty, since they say it is only fair for one to forfeit their life if they take the life of another. Others feel that the death penalty is not fair, and fear that many innocents have been penalized for something they did not do.The issue of capital punishment deals with the moral issues of many people with different opinions within a community. It is a ferine punishment, and many have stated that legal systems should be able to devise another punishment to put back it. Prejudice is present in cases involving the death penalty. Many feel that all civilized communities should abolish the death penalty. First of all, it can seem dreadfully unfair to the families of those found to be innocent after the fact, if they are executed for crimes they did not do.If the Courts of Justice were to misjudge a person and claim them to be fineable, they cannot repair their misunderstanding once that innocent person is dead. Executing an innocent is just as illicit as any put to death committed by in public. perhaps it can also be considered murder if the board causes the death of an innocent. Francois Robespierre, a well-known French revolutionist, once said, Human judgments are never so definite as to permit society to kill a humane being judged by other human beings. Why deprive ourselves of any chance to redeem such errors? (Goldenman 1998).It is unjust for anyone to make judgments about others, and to patch up whether they should live or die. Courts of Justice are known to make routines of errors, which means it is unreasonable to allow suspects with the least doubt of guilt to be sentenced to death. John Stuart Mill, the famous philosopher, wrote that capital punishment another barrier used for the death penalty is a wrong done to innocents. It is impossible to restitute all wrongful executions ever made. If by an error of justice an innocent person is put to death, the mistake can never be corrected all compensation, all reparation for the wrong is impossible. (Blacks 1999). The courts of justice and all legislative bodies comport the onus, and should regard it with great respect, because if they do not, they incur no different from wrong-doers in society who commit the crime of taking anothers life. It is a grave mistake to consider the death penalty as the main method to solve cases, or the best way to discourage crime, because wrongful bunkoions do occur, and it has been shown that the mental institution of the death penalty is no great disincentive. There are other methods of punishment, such a unyielding prison terms, which can serve to exact reparation for heinous crimes.The first cause of wrongful conv ictions is wrong or false information given by witnesses. For example, a US Army Sergeant, named Timothy Hennis, was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in South Carolina in 1986. One witness said he saw Hennis at the site of the murder, but the witness had mistaken Hennis for someone who looked like him. Some witnesses lie to ensure the defendant is convicted of murder. This usually happens when the actual killer attempts to shift the blame to someone else, so they can get international with it.In most cases, it is rather difficult to tell who the murderer is, and is based most frequently on who can tell the most persuading story to police. Because of this, the death penalty is the worst solution in most cases, because it does little to solve the case in a more clement way. Secondly, a great number of people consider capital punishment an evil act, because it is a uncivilised punishment exacted without just cause. It is might seem prudent to punish murderers with death be cause it tortures them, but their families, and the victims families, might think differently. The horror of a sentence of execution is compounded by years of waiting.Death row inmates are kept in unsocial cells, where they are likely to be confined for twenty-three hours of each day. Interaction with others is kept to a minimum. Perhaps this kind of treatment might be punishment enough. Many consider the ultimate form of punishment as no disincentive for the crime of murder, and feel it increases killing, rather than diminishes it. They also hold it to be chastely wrong. There are many difficult issues to deal with after a death sentence, which puts the family of the convicted person into as much discomfort and strife as the sentenced person.The most horrifying part is that they are constantly reminded of what will happen. The horrors of execution, the preparation for it, the psychological infliction of pain and the actual means of execution are considered by many to be barbaric. A whole sector of the community feels that it is an evil act to have any person put into that circumstance. In criminal justice, combining this kind of ritualism with killing is considered an aggravation of murder. Yet this is the kind of death the state imposes on those it executes. Black 1998) To punish evil with evil, the writer continues, and to exact an eye for an eye, and measure for measure, is to become as callous as the criminals. The last point, discrimination is also created by dint of the death penalty. In some cases, the court is prejudiced against the defendant. The reasons for their prejudice might be what they consider ignorance, racial bias, or poverty, as well as other undesirable traits. These characteristics can affect the way a judge and jury adjudicates the defendant. The family of a convicted person is also made to suffer from referred guilt and connectedness to crime, which is rarely repairable.Race is often an issue. Clarence Brandley, a black schoolhouse janitor, was convicted in 1981 and sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a white high school girl in Conroe, Texas. He was told by the police officer that since he was black, he had to be guilty of the murder. Judge Pickett stated about the case, The conclusion is inescapable that the investigation was not conducted to solve the crime, but to convict Brandley (Goldenman 1998). Prejudice in the court case proceedings has often contributed to the execution of many innocent people. Many supporters of the death penalty argue that it will deter violent crime.Dudley Sharp(2000) states, The incapacitation effect saves lives that is, that by executing murderers you hold back others from murdering, thereby saving an innocent life. The evidence of this is conclusive and incontrovertible. People of this opinion believe that murderers would think in two ways before killing, because they fear death. This idea has been shown to be entirely false. Murderers rarely consider the conseque nces before they commit a crime. If all murderers think of the consequences before they kill, the murder rate would be lower in legislative areas where the death penalty exists.In fact, it has been shown that murder incidence remains the same when regions that carry the death penalty are compared with those with no form of capital punishment. There is no conclusive evidence to prove that the death penalty deters crime. To sum up, it does make sense that all criminals should be penalized to preserve peace and justice. Murderers are criminals, and deserve to be punished for their crime, but not with their own death. The death penalty has many flaws. Innocent people can lose their lives for crimes of which they bear no blame.The death penalty is considered to be highly immoral. It is a form of cruel and unusual punishment. People suffer greatly, both emotionally and physically, before their execution, and their families likewise. Capital punishment is not an antidote for violent crime . It is perfectly possible to deprive murderers of their freedom and throw them in prison for the rest of their rude(a) lives. References Curry, Tim.
